Special Effects

Movies wouldnt be movies without special effects. Special effects can include makeup, which can make someone who is 19 look like the are 70, or make a human into an alien. Special effects makeup can also creat the illusion that somebody is cut and bleeding. Special effects can create the illusion that someone is flying by using wires. Special effects can also create illusions of things that arent actually there by using what is called a green screen. A green screen is used to place actors against a different background. Special effects can also include creating wind, rain, snow, and fog; blowing up a building, and breaking through a "brick wall."

  1. Special effects are great. Artists can be very creative with today's technology. It's amazing how they can make you look young, old, beautiful, ugly, etc. It's amazing how well they can change someone's appearance...Mrs. Doubtfire, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Special effects can make it seem like someone is flying or falling. They make things that are not real, look real. Movies have come a long way with special effects

  2. Compared to the movies of the past, today’s special effects make the movies more realistic and more entertaining because of the computer-generated effects. Look at the old Buck Rogers and and Doctor Who shows compared to latest Sci Fi movies, there is absolutely no comparison; however, some people enjoy the B-rates every now and then.

  3. New developments in technology allow even independent movies to have better special effects. Software is the big thing that allows small companies to compete on a more level field. Eventually, all movies are likely to be animated to lower the cost of actors. At that point, one would not even notice the difference. In the Lord of the Rings movies, the massive amounts of soldiers were all CGI. Recent movies such as 300 have also gone this route.

  4. Society definitely wants special effects! Action movies are huge at the box office. Its cool to see how the movie industry has evolved from the past films to present as it is represented in your blog. The art and science aspect of movies surely makes a bigger splash on the movie screen.

  5. I love movies and it is exciting to see how far speical effects have come and where they will go in a few years and even 50 years from now. You look back 50 years and see black and white movies and no speical effects. In 50 years i see more interactive theathers like 3d and 4d with things like water and air put into every type of movie to add even more to the experice.

  6. Special effects are what makes a movie. Without the special effects, stories might not be as clear, and the movies might be just plain boring. I always love seeing what some makeup can do to change a person completely. And hey, at least we know what brad pitt is going to look like when hes old!

  7. Special effects have come a long way. Most movies wouldn't be the same if there were no special effects. The possibilities are endless for movie makers when they use special effects. It's amazing to see the combination between technology and ones mind.

  10. Special effects are great but at times it seems movie directors rely too heavily on them and as as result many movies lack substance and quality acting. Star Wars and Back to the Future are two movies which did a good job of serving both puropses. How soon will it be before virtual reality and fast computer graphics combine to produce virtual stars which are indistinguishable from the real ones?

  11. It's absolutely amazing what we can do with special effects in todays world. I just went to go see that movie Last House on The Left about a week ago and the special effects presented in that movie were brutal. The way that they create cuts and different objects going through peoples heads were so real. It's cool to see how special effects have progressed through the years of movies.

  13. A former roommate works in the VFX/Production management industry -- recently said friend of mine sat down with a director (name witheld) about some potential work in the future and said that he wanted to make the movie a bunch of "trailer shots" - that is, shots that look good in trailers - and that they'll have a "bunch of talking head bullshit" to string the movie along, but it was the trailer shots that were important. It went a long way to proving some of my theories about modern movies.

  14. I love the way special effects have impacted the movie industry and how awesome it has made the stories become. Some comic book movies would never have a chance to feel authentic without the help of the improvements in technology.

  18. I remember in the mid 90s when movies like Independence Day came out and all the Terminator movies that people were upset that there was not plot line and it was all just special effects. You don’t hear that as much any more. When I saw Wanted it was not for the plot, it was to see the car crashes and effects. I think movies like 300 had the great effects and the great plotlines. You can’t a good movie without a good story. Look at The Watchman with so many plots and subplots and great special effects.
