3D M0ViES iN THEATERS...

Jeffrey Katzenberg must be breaking out the champagne. Hollywood's new obsession with 3D has finally ended a prolonged staredown between studios and movie theater owners over who would foot the bill for theaters converting to digital projection. You can't show 3D movies in theaters without digital equipment, which is a key reason why five film studios announced agreements yesterday with the nation's top theater chains to help cover the costs of converting roughly 14,000 screens to digital projection over the next three years. According to Variety, the five studios -- 20th Century Fox, Disney, Paramount, Universal and Lionsgate -- will pay a "virtual" print fee to help exhibitors defray their conversion costs.

  1. 3D movies are great. Everyone loves a good movie, but when the characters come to life and seem to jump out at you, it's even better. It's great to watch little kids get excited over their favorite characters jumping out of the screen. Disney has a few shows and rides that are 3D...my three year old niece loved it, she was so excited. It's great that some of the film studios are helping to pick up the cost of converting to digital in the movie theatres.

  2. Even though the top 5 saying that they will help with the cost, I’m pretty sure that this expense will be passed on to the consumer. But it may be worth the extra expense to view a 3-D movie compared to viewing a flat screen movie which can be viewed at home. Although I never viewed a 3-D movie without the funky glasses, I wonder if when viewing the new movies you will need them.

  3. 3-D is the next innovation. Think about it, we have pretty much reached the limits of what we can see and hear. This is the father of true virtual reality. Hopefully, our recent 3-D movies will do well in the box office. Since there is different technology, it would not work at home, raising the demand for movie tickets. It is also about time to upgrade to digital. It will cut costs in the long run and improve its durability.

  6. Disney makes cool 3-D movies. My mom recently saw "Bolt" with a student she works with for after school care. She said it was great, and 3-D glasses were given, but optional...just as sort of an enhancing tool.

  7. 3-D movies are cool but the glasses you have to wear are quite annoying!!!!! In Disney there were a few shows that were 3-D and they were pretty cool. They added effects like if it were raining, you would get rained on...or when there was apple pie baking you could smell the apple pie. It was neat.

  8. I loved seeing things 3D as a kid and I still do now! I think it makes the movies that much better and keeps those awake who tend to fall asleep!

  9. I have never seen a 3D movie but I have heard that is a great way to see a good movie. The glasses are pretty funny looking on people. But who cares as long as the movie is great. It is amazing what technology can do.

  10. 3-D movies are expensive. A couple of years ago, they did Nightmare Before Christmas in 3-D on Halloween (to celebrate its anniversary). The tickets were 12 dollars and I wasn’t too impressed. Recently when I saw Coraline (I love Neil Gaiman) in 3-D it was a much better experience. Sure you have to wear those Drew Carry-looking glasses but it was still cool. Obviously not all movies lend themselves to this medium but it is exciting to be visually stimulated.
