Filmin' it old school

Check out this vintage camera. It's a Lumière camera of 1896. Over a hundred years old. Look at the construction of the casing and all the innerds. they don't make em like they used to.

  1. I find it very interesting to see all of the old televisions, cameras and phonographs. I can only imagine what my Grandmother would say if she were still alive to witness all of todays toys.

  2. Remember how on one of our assignments Kevin Kelly said he was able to find new working parts for technology we considered extinct? I wonder if it is possible to find new parts for the Lumière camera. Or if not find new parts, it is possible to fabricate new parts using the technology available at the time. I wonder what the instruction manual was like for this.

  3. Imagine bringing that along on vacation. Who would volunteer to carry it? Look at how far we've come with the camera. Cameras are so small these days that you could fit it into your pants pocket. No wonder there aren't many family photos of our grandparents generation. Nice photos.

  4. Talk about quality. This is a fine example of what a quality piece of technology is or was for that matter, not that junk they make in china today, no offense to the chinese. Although large and bulky it's solid.

  5. These really take you back in time. Imagine the warranty on those things. The other I thought of was the picture camera and how back in the old days no one was suppose to smile because it would be ruined, that’s is why some pictures we see have people on them with serious faces. I’d imagine this thing would have some serious draw backs as well.

  6. Wow! Could you imagine on prom day every parent using this to take pictures of their kid and prom date. haha. It's truely amazing to see how far we have come since that old thing. Cameras today are no where near that size and not to add probably have a better picture.

  7. Movie and camera technology has come a long way. From cranking up the video camera to cameras that record right to dvds. With technology growing in elecrtoics every year movie become bigger and better from the big screen to the home theater. Familes can make their own movies and make it look professial.

  8. To make a film means to be a producer and it requires a combination of art and technique of film narration and the tricks of finance. Filming have come a long way indeed. I can’t say I remember this type of filming but it is interesting to know and learn about this lumiere camera. I am glad we don’t have them that big anymore. They sometimes come so small you can put it in your pants pocket. Fascinating pictures this is a work of art.

  9. I would be interested to see how pictures would turn out with one of these cameras and compare it to a modern photograph. Technologically we have definitely evolved this piece to what may seem like perfection now but will only be improved upon in the future.
